Wrap-Around Cartoning Machines: Introduction and In-depth Insights

Wrapping carton sleeves over primary packaging containers is a modern admired and sought-after approach to secondary packaging and multipack arrangement.

Referred to as wrap-around sleeve packaging, such a packaging method is becoming prevailing among an array of industries including food, dairy, drinks, and beverages, and is preferred to their simple packaging style yet provides unmatched flexibility to contain primary containers of all sorts of shapes and in all kinds of formats. Sleeve wrap-around packaging is also considered a sustainable packaging approach and alternative to conventional rigid cartons, just as it is addressed by Industry Today

“Sleeve takes less paper and printing material than a six-sided carton does.” – an industrial insight article contributed by Zixin Yuan, the digital marketing coordinator at ÉLITER Packaging Machinery.

The digital marketing team of ÉLITER Packaging Machinery would like to cover in this article some holistic insights around such kind of packaging as well as to discuss which are the options of packaging machines that can work to automate it process.

What are Packaging Sleeves? – Fundamentals to Wrap-Around Cartoning Packaging

Packaging sleeve can refer to either sleeve labeling or cardboard sleeve, however, we will be only discussing the latter here in this article now that the former is plastic packaging that has nothing to do with wrap-around carton packaging.

CARTON SLEEVE VS LABEL SLEEVE

Carton sleeves are a form of packaging that is typically used as an overwrap or outer covering for products. They are in essence paperboard wraps that can be applied over a single item or multiple units of primary packaging, ranging from cans to bottles and cups, in all shapes and sizes.

Sleeves can be designed to neatly encase the product either partially or fully, depending on the design and the level of coverage required, the following examples provide a comparison and contrast between total wrap-around and partial wrap-around of sleeve packaging:

Sleeves are not simply pieces of flat cardboard blank, however, they are supposed to be designed to strictly fit the shape of the primary packaging container they will overwrap. Depending on the certain cases, the sleeve can be designed with some unique structures.

Pre-glued sleeve or flat sleeve: which one is better?

The choice between a pre-glued sleeve and a flat sleeve largely depends on the specific requirements of the packaging operation, including factors such as production volume, desired speed of application, the capability of the packaging equipment, storage and shipping considerations, and cost.

pre-glued sleeve vs. wrap around sleeve

In some brief words,

Pre-glued sleeves fit better manual working processes now that workers or machines simply need to expand the sleeve and apply it to the product, the convenience and consistent results in terms of assembly are partially the advantage of pre-glued sleeve because the gluing is done uniformly in a factory setting.

On the other hand, flat sleeves require applying glue during the packaging process which cannot be easily handled by manual work but calls the essentialness of a specific packaging machine like a wrap-around cartoner or an automatic sleever machine.

Nevertheless, some primary packaging containers cannot be handled by pre-glued sleeves yet are restricted to forming packaging flat from sleeve blankby a wrap-around approach.

Wrap-Around Cartoning Machines: Introduction Inside Out

There is some ambiguous definition of such kind of packaging equipment. Wrap-around cartoning machine can either refer to a specifically designed bespoke packaging equipment that overwraps carton sleeves around packaging containers, while in some cases an automatic sleever machine may also be referred to as a wrap-around cartoner.

In this article, we exclude the definition of sleever, but only focus on the concept of such a cartoning machine that is customized for the wrap-around packaging process, referred to as a wrap-around cartoning machine.

Wrap-Around Cartoning Machine is a customized packaging equipment

In difference to an automatic sleever that is flexible in accommodating different packaging containers and multipack formats, a wrap-around cartoning machine is more like a fixed automation in that the machine will be designed specifically for each project and cannot be adapted to packaging that is not previously confirmed.

Wrap-Around Cartoning Machine is for slower speed application

Now that the machine is customized based on an end-load cartoner of intermittent motion, a wrap-around cartoning machine can only fulfill a maximum speed of up to some 40 packages per minute, size and packaging format dependent.

Wrap-Around Cartoning Machine is more affordable than an automatic sleever

In difference to a wrap-around sleever that is usually fully servo driven with mutlple axis, a wrap-around cartoning machine is simpler in engineering and design, as well as in terms of structure. The result is that customers with limited budgets are suggested to opt for the latter.
