What is the Difference Between Cartoning and Case Packing?
The conventional stereotype considers case packing and cartoning to be different forms of packaging with regard to the packaging size, materials, and purpose of the packaging, now that cartoning is for secondary packaging while case packing serves as a kind of tertiary packaging.
The difference in the objects loaded in the carton or case
Cartoning is usually considered a secondary packaging to loading a single unit of primary packaging such as flow-wrapped packs, pillow bags, bottles, etc, and when it comes to the specific objects, they could be flow-wrapped cakes, plastic bags of cereals, marker pens, toys, chocolate bars and whatever that may come up to your mind.
Case packing, on the other hand, as the tertiary packaging, has been used as a medium to group secondary packaging in mass quantity for the purpose of facilitating transport and warehousing along the supply chain and is sometimes referred to as shipping case packaging. Yet in some less frequent cases, the case packing also applies to direct the primary packaging or container units and gets loaded with wine bottles, cup noodles, carbonated drinks (CBDs), etc.
The Difference in terms of packaging materials used
Cartoning involves placing products into cartons or boxes as a single selling unit the packaging cost would be a primary concern to its selling price. Cartoning usually applies, predominantly, paperboard sheets or folding cartons now that the material is lightweight and more flexible to be combined with a variety of ancillary packaging including a mix of paper, aluminum, and plastic where required (like liquid or food products needing extra preservation).
Case Packing, however, is used for larger quantities, bulk products, or shipment purposes, and has to take into consideration the potential damage caused to the packaging within, for which reason the material used for case packing should be more heavy-duty and solid against external impacts and pressure. Cases are generally made from heavier, corrugated cardboard which provides strength and durability. The high burst, tear, and tensile strength makes corrugated boxes resistant to pressure and impact damage. The material is durable enough to stack, even with heavy products inside.
